The first Mentor written, more than 12 years ago, comprised an electronic text-only version of the Oxford Handbooks of Clinical Medicine and Specialties. The software was written as a component of the EMIS Clinical System by Dr Gordon Brooks.
From the start the Mentor module was integrated into the patient consultation record and regularly updated by electronic patches. Dr Murray Longmore provided initial clinical updates as part of the OUP Handbook authoring process.
Early user feedback prompted rapid expansion of the work to include Patient Information Leaflets (PILS) written by Dr Tim Kenny and the formation of groups of peer reviewers and authors who helped tailor the work to meet its immediate reference role.
Further immediate and detailed references continued to be added and integrated to shape Mentor into the comprehensive library of content that it is today.
